MEXT Scholarship 2025: How to Write a Research Plan That Gets Selected

November 3, 20247 min read

The MEXT Japanese Government Scholarship is one of the most competitive scholarships available. Here are the strategies that actually work, based on successful applicants we have guided.

What is the MEXT Scholarship?

The MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) scholarship is a fully funded scholarship provided by the Japanese government. It covers:

  • Full tuition at your Japanese university
  • Monthly stipend (¥117,000–¥145,000 depending on level)
  • Return airfare from your home country
  • No bond — you are not required to return to your home country afterward
  • Types of MEXT Scholarships

  • Research Student (大学院生) — For postgraduate study at a Japanese university
  • Undergraduate (学部生) — For bachelor's degree students
  • Teacher Training — For in-service teachers
  • College of Technology — For technical college study
  • The Application Process

    Stage 1: Embassy Recommendation

You apply through the Japanese Embassy in Nepal. This includes:

  • Application form
  • Field of study and study plan
  • Academic transcripts
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Japanese and English language test results (JLPT, TOEFL/IELTS)
  • Medical report
  • Stage 2: University Recommendation

Shortlisted candidates are recommended to Japanese universities, which then conduct their own screening.

    Stage 3: Final Selection

The Ministry of Education in Japan makes the final selection.

How to Write a Winning Research Plan / Field of Study

This is where most applicants fail. Here is what works:

    1. Be Specific, Not Generic "I want to study Japanese language and culture" is a rejection letter. Instead: "I aim to examine the lexical transfer patterns in Nepali-Japanese code-switching among third-generation diaspora communities in the Kanto region, using corpus linguistic methodology."

    2. Connect to Japan Explain why Japan specifically — what Japanese researchers, institutions, or methodologies exist nowhere else?

    3. Show Your Preparation Mention Japanese academics whose work you have read. Cite Japanese research papers. This shows you are serious.

    4. Future Application Clearly explain how this research will benefit Nepal or your home institution when you return.

    5. Match Your Supervisor Research specific professors at Japanese universities whose work aligns with yours. Mention them by name in your plan.

    Timeline

  • Embassy applications typically open in April–May each year for the following year intake
  • Results from embassy screening: approximately August
  • University placement: October–December
  • Arrival in Japan: March–April

Start preparing at least 8–10 months before the embassy application deadline.
